Important and quite rare, 1860's Civil War Stereoview by Mathew Brady from the series of War Views featuring a disconcerting image of a dead Confederate Soldier in a trench at Fort Mahone referred to by the soldiers as "Fort Damnation" at Petersburg. The view is titled on the label at the back which reads in part War Views. / This picture is a good view of the covered ways inside the Rebel Fort Mahone, called by the soldiers Fort Damnation. The Union soldiers had to charge up and down the obstruction. In the foreground centre(sic) is a dead rebel soldier sticking out through the debris, and further on lies another Confederate soldier. 3183 / Published by E. This view was taken the morning after the storming of Petersburg, Va.

The Stereoview is from The War For the Union Series taken by Brady Photographers. The Stereoview depicts a deceased Confederate soldier lying spread eagle in a trench associated with the series of bombproof fortifications known to Confederate soldiers as "Fort Mahone" and to the Union troops (who suffered significant casualties storming these fortifications) as "Fort Damnation".

At the foreground right there is a Cheval de frise - a common type of fortification used during the American Civil War made of spiked wooden poles. The Photographs are mounted on a flat, square cornered, yellow card mount with affixed Anthony label on the back which includes the title of the View and the publisher's slug. This rare, Civil War Stereoview Photograph is in excellent condition. The images themselves are clean and crisp and exhibit sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. Both the Photographs and the card mount are exceptionally well preserved with sharp corners to the mount along with some light soiling to the reverse.
