This fantastic, period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 3 5/8 by 2 1/4 and is mounted on its original, square corner CDV Card Mount (card measures approx 4 by 2 1/2). This wonderful, Album Photograph pictures the wood hulled, three masted, Steam Sloop-of-War at anchor - likely in New Orleans harbor. USS Hartford was launched 22 November 1858 at the Boston Navy Yard; sponsored by Miss Carrie Downes, Miss Lizzie Stringham, and Lieutenant G. Preble; and commissioned 27 May 1859, Captain Charles Lowndes in command.

USS Hartford served in several prominent campaigns in the American Civil War as the flagship of David G. Farragut, most notably the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. This very rare and wonderful CDV Photograph is in excellent condition. The Image exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. Both the Albumen Photograph and the Card Mount are clean and crisp and very well preserved. The right hand corners of the mount have been clipped to facilitate insertion into a period CDV Photo Album.
