CASED 1/6 PLATE AMBROTYPE - HANDSOME SOUTHERN MAN - CIVIL WAR SECESSION COCKADE - NOTE: I HAVE ADDED TWO COCKADE IMAGES as examples of lighter colored cockades found in North Carolina and South Carolina. The handsome young man wears what I assume to be a North or South Carolina Secession Cockade on his lapel. These images showing a Southern Gentleman wearing one of these decorative symbols are highly sought after today. More than likely his sweetheart or wife made this ornate cockade for him and he was proudly showing it off in this superb ambrotype. His likeness has warm hand tinting applied to his face and is tucked in a full leatherette case.
If you are a collector of these rare images containing cockades, you won't want to miss this opportunity if you are a Southern image collector. CONDITION : Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The sixth plate ambrotype contains bold contrast, wonderful tonal range and sharpness. Warm hand tinting is another bonus of the final image.
The case has a nicely restored leather hinge, both of the working clasps and a bold red velvet pillow adjacent to his portrait. The gorgeous pattern on the exterior of the case is one you will not see often.
