QUARTER PLATE TINTYPE OF FOUR CIVIL WAR UNION SOLDIERS. Here is a really nice, clear QUARTER plate tintype of four Union soldiers in a very fine thermoplastic case along with a printers copper printing block of this same image, undoubtedly for a publication and possibly a regimental history. The case is especially fine with very sharp edges and just about perfect condition. There is a very tiny chip in the bottom right edge of the front face and one of the closure clips has its small tip missing. The case closes and snaps just fine. The image shows two soldiers in the rear appearing to be wearing regulation enlisted frock coats with the collars turned down. The man facing sideways on the bottom left may be an officer as it appears that there shows sign of a cloak coat showing beneath his cape. He appears to be the man in authority here. The emulsion is slightly bubbled that no doubt occurred when the image was originally processed. The case is a fine Scoville Union Case with a clear label including the penciled: No 126 Higgins and sharp unstained facing pad. It depicts a harvest scene inside of an oval border with geometric and floral motifs edging the case. Again, the only damage is a small chip that you can see in my scan. Finding a quarter plate Union case in this condition is hard to do. The copper printing block measuring 4-1/2 x 5-1/2 is stamped on the edge with the mark of the well known Denver, Colorado engraving company, Williamson-Haffner. The stamping is preceded by Our Cuts Talk. I suspect that the No 126 Higgins marking within the case is a clue as to where this image was reproduced. Someone is going to recognize this image, thus knowing who some or all of these men are which should prove to be very historical and interesting. See my other auctions for a rare early ambrotype of a man with a Colt Model 1849 revolver prominently shown.
