Antique mid-19th century daguerreotype photograph housed in an original Union case, dating to approximately the 1850s-1860s Civil War era. This piece features a portrait of a couple, beautifully framed behind glass with an ornate gilt brass mat and red velvet interior lining. The exterior case is made of early thermoplastic (Union case) with a detailed six-point star and floral motif design, a classic and collectible pattern from the period.
The case retains its original hinge and clasp. The image remains visible with good subject detail for its age. Some typical age-related wear is present, including spotting/haze to the image and surface wear to the case edges, as shown in photos. The interior velvet and brass frame are intact and display nicely. Type: Daguerreotype (one-of-a-kind image on metal plate). Case: Union case with embossed star and floral design. 3.5" x 3" (see ruler photo for reference). Condition: Antique condition with expected wear; no major structural damage. A wonderful authentic Civil War-era photographic piece, ideal for collectors of early photography, Victorian antiques, or historical memorabilia.
