In March, 1862, following the Battle of New Bern, NC, the city surrendered to Union General Ambrose Burnside. The Union side held New Bern throughout the war.

In early Feb, 1864, Confederate troops under Gen. George Pickett attacked New Bern but did not hold it. This carte de visite was likely taken by a northern photographer in New Bern, NC on the 22nd of June, 1864. The young Union officer it shows inscribed the back of the Cdv with "Newberne, NC, June 22 / 64"; an obvious misspelling of the word New Bern. There's a good chance a collector can ID who this officer is. Go through the program "Photos Sleuth" through "Military Images" magazine for help.

There are probably other photos of this officer, including one signed with his name. Military Images magazine is published in Arlington, VA, by Rod Coddington.
