1860's CIVIL WAR CDV PHOTOGRAPH OF IDENTIFIED US NAVY OFFICER USS POTOMAC

  
Rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of United States Navy Civil War Lieutenant Commander Chaplain Robert Givin who served aboard the USS Potomac of the Gulf Blockade Squadron. This very rare, period, albumen CDV Photograph measures approx. 2 1/8 by 3 3/8 and is mounted on its original, square corner, gold rule border CDV Card Mount (card measures approx 2 1/2" by 4"). This wonderful Photograph features a near 3/4 length seated portrait of Givin wearing the 1863 uniform of a U. A period pencil inscription on the back of the mount reads Chaplain Givin U. The USS Potomac was a frigate launched in 1822. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, after a storied and lengthy service around the world, the USS Potomac departed from New York City on 10 September 1861 for the Gulf Blockading Squadron off Mobile Bay.

At this time, William Thomas Sampson served aboard her until 25 December 1861 when he transferred to the USS Water Witch as executive officer. This very rare and original, CDV Portrait of an identified Civil War Union Navy Officer Chaplain is in excellent condition.

The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich. Both the Photo and the Card Mount are clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved with the lower corners of the mount are clipped done to facilitate insertion into a CDV Photo Album of the period!
