Signed CDV of Charles C. Wehrun, 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
Wehrun was wounded while part of a skirmish line in the Miller Cornfield at the Battle of Antietam. The regiment losses were a total of 283 of 340 men engaged (according to the regimental history) for 83% casualties, the highest of any Federal regiment on the battlefield that day. The 12th Massachusetts would face Confederate soldiers from Evander Law's Brigade and the famed 1st Texas Infantry from Hood's Texas Brigade. Commissioned to 2nd Lieutenant in November 1862, he was then promoted to 1st Lieutenant on March 31st, 1863. Wehrun was wounded again on the afternoon of July 1st, 1863 at Oak Ridge where Baxter's Brigade engaged Iverson's North Carolinians and O'Neal's Alabamians.The regiment would exhaust its ammunition until finally being forced to retreat. Total losses on July 1st was 9 KIA, 41 WIA, and 61 missing in action.
