Rare and original, 1850's Pre-Civil War Quarter Plate Cased Ambrotype Photograph of a United States Army Sergeant on a General's Staff in full dress uniform with Bearskin Hat!! This outstanding, period Ambrotype Photograph measures approx. 3 1/8 by 4 1/8 and is housed in a beautiful, Gutta Percha / Thermoplastic, Union Hard Case with original matt and binding and cover glass. The Ambrotype is a wonderful, 3/4 length, seated portrait of the of the Staff Officer holding his dress sword on his lap and with a wonderful, bearskin Hat on the draped table to his left.

The chevrons on his jacket sleeve identify him as a Sergeant and we have been told that his dress uniform identifies him as a Sergeant of a General's Staff. He wears a ca1850 variant of the 1832 U.

And a double breasted dress jacket with epaulets. The Case features a fairly elaborate design that is designated by Berg as Berg 3-22 Geometric.

It is very attractive with no significant damage but with some minor roughage on the bottom edge of the front cover. This very rare and wonderful, Pre Civil War Ambrotype Portrait of a United States Army Officer is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. Although overall the Image is a bit dark. The Image views beautifully with no surface crazing or flaking however when held at an acute angle to a light source one can see that there are some areas where the lacquer is separating.
