Original ninth-plate ruby ambrotype of a soldier and his young son? Both have painted gold buttons - the son has an unusual star-shaped one at the top.

The father's jacket has a breast pocket, which I think was also unusual. Was the boy too young to be a musician, or drummer?

Very good condition with some mat abrasions and a couple of small spots. It's in a half case, but it almost looks like it was meant to be a hanging case..
