Border War Tintype Image American Civil War Pistols Partisan Frock Coats Boots

  

Up for your consideration is this wonderful tintype image from the American Civil War. This image was part of a large collection which included numerous items from the mid-west.

This is one of the most interesting of the whole collection. To us, these men really look Confederate but they could also be irregulars on the Union side as well. The young man's tunic in the center does not appear to be any Union regulation uniform that we have ever seen. The young man's hat on the far right screams Confederate to us as well as the fact that they are all dressed very differently and individually. The group is well armed with what appears to be a Remington or Whitney in the center. The man on the right has what appears to be a Sharps in his coat pocket. Their outfits are also very western with heavy boots and frock coats.

The image is extremely sharp and clear and my brother and I can't decide if there is a bit of tinting in those cheeks. It measures 2 and 1/2 by 3 and 3/4 inches.
