Amazing collection of original photos, featuring a quarter-plate daguerreotype of Captain Samuel Marion Wilkes, shown in his South Carolina militia uniform. Wilkes fought for the south in the Civil War, and was killed in action at the first Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861. Several collectors have now contacted me saying that they believe Wilkes wore this uniform when he fought for the Confederacy in the war. Before the war he was also a member of the state legislature. The second daguerreotype is a circa 1855 sixth-plate of Wilkes' wife Louisa and his son Samuel, Jr. Also included is the 1860s leather photo album shown, acquired along with the dags. There is at least one person ID'd as a Wilkes inside. Hoyle, part of the Crescent Regiment of New Orleans. I believe the Hoyles were related to General Ramseur by marriage.

For reference, here is a CDV of Hoyle in his CSA uniform. It's NOT included: Most of the photos in the album are New Orleans, North Carolina, and Missouri. I believe there are three from Whitney's Gallery in Minnesota.

Quite a few are identified. The photos overall are in very good to excellent condition, and look better than my camera shots, which came out a bit dark. Daguerreotypes Captain Wilkes image is a 1/4 plate in very good condition. I see tarnish spots, but no damage. The underside of the glass, which is very thick, is dirty, but can be cleaned. Looks like the original seals are in place but very fragile. Covers are separated along the spine. Wilkes' dag is also very good.. Couple of spots, but no obvious damage.

Seals are inside the case but not intact. All of the photos listed are original. None of the Civil War related CDVs in the album are trimmed and are in very good vintage condition. The album is in fair to good condition..
