Umbrella Rock looks down about 1000 feet to the Tennessee River valley near Chattanooga, in the southeast corner of the state. Beside the subjects, on the right, is a large iron plaque interpreting the Battle of Waunatchie, named for a suburb of Chattanooga. 28-29 1863 was one of the rare night fights during the Civil War, and the fighting was confusing for both sides.

Lookout Mountain served as a lookout for two confederate officers who were surprised to see, by daylight, a large union force marching along the river. When night well things went to hell. About roughly 1000 were lost or wounded, with the Union army prevailing in part by luck and low light in its attempts to control a supply line to Chattanooga across the river on Brown's Ferry. Was fought October 28-29, 1863, in Hamilton and Marion counties, Tennessee, and Dade County, Georgia, in the American Civil War. A Union force had seized Brown's Ferry on the Tennessee River, opening a supply line to the Union army in Chattanooga. Confederate forces attempted to dislodge the Union force defending the ferry and again close this supply line but were defeated. Wauhatchie was one of the few night battles of the Civil War. DIMENSIONS: 6 1/2" x 4 1/4". SHARP FOCUS AND VERY GOOD CONTRAST. THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION OR A COPY.
