The album includes portraits of Schuyler Colfax a well-known businessman and politician who served as a US Senator from Indiana and the 17th Vice President under President Ulysses S. Gee (a sergeant in Company B of the 32nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment who fought in the Red River Campaign and Battle of Nashville), his wife Emma Gee, South Bend families, Notre Dame students, and many others. All the portraits are inserted in windowed leaves with gilt borders, most are identified, and most were taken in South Bend during the early 1860s.
