Fine quarter plate clear glass ambrotype of bearded Civil War Confederate soldier identified in period ink on a slip laid in the case bottom as Nehemiah Butt 18th Va Btn H. I found two service records for Nehemiah Butt, one as a private in Company B, 18 Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery; the other as an Artificer in Company L, 1 Confederate Engineer Troops. Both of these records are attached. We know our guy was in the 18th Virginia heavy artillery. I believe that both service records point to one and the same, due in part that an. Artificer was a military workman in the artillery. From the National Park Service website. An artificer was a military workman in the artillery. He would not be an officer, but a non-commissioned officer or enlisted man who was a specialist of some kind.

These men generally served in a capacity we would call work leader or foreman. Eally is a museum quality piece in every respect, from its pristine condition to the important rebel identification. He's quite the character with a robust beard, long hair, and intent look. The image is complete with cheeks tinted a rosy hue. Image Type : Clear Glass Ambrotype.

Skillfully re-backed and sealed with new glass and filmoplast P90. Housing : Half of a patriotic cross canon union case with light wear to edges and surface, and some minor loss to corners.
