1868 CDV portraying Civil War Gettysburg Chaplain William Corby (left) seated with Notre Dame Founder Edward Sorin (center) and Father Auguste Lemonnier (right). The 3 subjects would become Presidents of Notre Dame University. Father William Corby (1833 - 1897) is best known for giving general absolution to the Irish Brigade on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. Father Edward Sorin (1814 1893) was the founder of the University of Notre Dame and of St. Edward's University in Texas. Father August Lemonnier was President of Notre Dame from 1872 - 1874. The carte de visite has no photographer's information, but it came in an album with another CDV photograph of Father Lemonnier (I'll be listing it shortly) which was taken by South Bend, Indiana photographer James Bonney.
