This is a superb Civil War CDV album of U. It was specially created by the firm of Leavitt & Allen of New York in 1862. This set was created to put faces to the names that the public was reading about in the news. They made the most handsome CDV album, with patriotic metal clasps which nearly reach across both front and back faces. The claps are made of brass with superb detail surmounted by a high relief American eagle and shield motif.

These are applied to a rich brown leather embossed album cover measuring approximately 5 1/2 inches by 6 3/4 inches with the clasp latch bearing in raised letters the proclamation, Our Generals. The pages are gilt edged and each page is trimmed with red and gray borders and stars. There are spaces inside for 24 CDV's of the then most prominent General officers. There is a pre-printed gold leaf index page listing the Generals in order. They are: Scott, Halleck, McClellan, Fremont, Wool, Dix, McDowell, Heintzelman, Mansfield, Buell, Pope, Hunter, Banks, Burnside, Curtis, Grant, Franklin, Butler, Sigel, Sprague, Anderson, Blenker, Viele, and Mitchell.

Unfortunately, there are only four CDV's remaining - Grant, Butler, Fremont, and Mitchell. It would be an interesting project to refill the album. There is a handwritten presentation, Presented to M J.

Seasholtz (some of the writing is hard to decipher). The top clasp is missing. The album shows the usual expected wear from honest use.

Someone, at some point, smeared something on the index page and closed the album. It would appear that the index page and the page next to it stuck together in a few spots and were then pulled apart. Whatever it is, it's no longer sticky and is merely unsightly. It may well be possible to remove the marks. Please enlarge all the pictures as they are part of the description.
