"Children of Slaves" Freedmen's School Tintype. A scarce and important gem-sized tintype of five children who were used to promote efforts made by the Williston School in Wilmington, NC to educate freed slaves and their children. This gem-sized tintype measures approximately 1" x 3/4", and while you will see wear and chipping to the emulsion, the subjects -- and what they represent -- shine through. It seems that in an effort to change the hearts and minds of those unsympathetic to the school's aim of educating newly freed people, five young students were chosen in 1869 to travel to select locations to demonstrate that they could learn just as well as white children given the proper opportunity.

A notice in the "Bangor Daily Whig and Courier" on August 6th, 1869 marked the occasion of these children's visit to Maine, announcing: Children of Slaves, At the City Hall this (Friday) evening there will be a practical illustration of the work of teachers among the freedmen. Stone, with two teachers and five colored children from the Orphan Asylum and Williston School, Wilmington, N. Singing, speaking, and recitations by the children. A powerful image of children who were given the opportunity, for the first time, to shape their own destiny in America.

While there is a known carte-de-visite and gem-type image of the same five children taken during their visit to Maine in 1869.
