Civil War-Era Photograph of Corporal Matthew Hale Love, Thomas's Legions, NC

  
Whole plate tinted tintytpe in Victorian cherry oval frame of Captain Matthew Hale Love who commanded 2nd Company A (Cherokee Indian Company) Thomas's North Carolina Legion. The image shows Love as a Corporal (later 1st Sgt) in Co L 6th NCST. The "NC" and "6" is in gilt on the front of the kepi. He was 16 and it was his very first Civil war image. Ronnie was told by the family member that the image was either James Love or his brother. In Ronnie's handwriting on the back there is a label that reads: "James Love Confederate Haywood Co NC" The Love Family member wrote on the back: " Love-possibly James or his brother Haywood County, NC". After considerable research I determined it was not James Love (or his brother).

The best candidate seems to be an Uncle of James Robert Love (who commanded Thomas North Carolina Legion), Matthew Hale Love b1840 - 1906, a student from Waynesville, NC and was a 1st Sgt in Co L 16th (6th NCST) Regt NC Volunteers - and later became Capt of 2nd Co A (Indian Company) Thomas' North Carolina Legion. Matthew Hale Love lived until 1906 and it is possible that there are later images of him that can corroborate this ID. 8" X 10" tinted, whole-plate tintype photograph in a 13" X 14" original oval cherry wood Victorian-style frame.
