The 2nd was famous for having a woman who enlisted and served as a man. The regiment also had Civil War decorated nurse Anna Etheridge. She was one of two women to receive the Kearny Cross.Both women have Wikipedia entries. Scanlan enlisted in the US Navy after his 2nd Michigan Infantry service. He was a member of Fairbanks GAR post in Detroit.
