Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Civil War-era tintype photograph of a union soldier, complete with gutta percha union case! An early form of photography, tintypes were made by transferring a positive image directly to a thin sheet of metal, which was coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. They were the most popular form of photography in the 1860s and 1870s.

This one is a ninth-plate tintype, which refers to the size of the image. This tintype depicts a young Union soldier photographed from the waist up in full uniform, including hat and military leathers. A member of the infantry, the chevrons on his sleeve denote his rank as sergeant. This is a beautifully clear image. Tintype is mounted in an embossed gutta percha union case with metal closure.

A light red velvet pad with embossed scroll design on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph. Image is surrounded by an elaborate gilt metal mat with elaborate scroll and floral details. The outside of the case has raised floral and scroll designs on both sides.

Tintype presents in good, as-found antique condition, with patina and some loss of detail on the image due to darkening. Velvet pad has minor discoloration. Union case has wear and minor dings commensurate with age and use, including scuffs and possible surface loss at edges. What a fantastic addition to any antique photography or Civil War collection. 1-3/4 in width x appx. 2-3/8" in height (frame obscures borders of image) Dimensions/case: 2-1/2" in width (closed), 2-7/8" in height, 3/4" in depth (closed).
