Civil War CDV-Gilbert Bates-1st Wisconsin-Vicksburg to Washington Walk

  
This CDV was taken of SGT Gilbert H. Bates while with the 1st Wisconsin Artillery in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Bates was from Edgerton, Wisconsin. At the time, Union forces were occupying Vicksburg at the end of the war. In 1868 Bates started to walk from Vicksburg to Washington D. To prove that people in the South would do him no harm. He carried a Union flag the entire route. It took him three months and he arrived in Washington on April 14th, 1868.

This photo was taken by Herrick & Dirr of Vicksburg, Mississippi. There is a pencil notation on the back (see photo #5).

We make out the words: Sergt. Our research indicates there were some CDV's created after Bates reached Washington to celebrate his accomplishment. The significance of this CDV is that it was taken in Vicksburg where his trek began.

CDV has faded and there is a dark spot in the upper right hand corner-we do not know if this is a stain or shadow. Measures about 2.5 X 4. We believe this CDV to be rare.
