Was appointed August 22, 1862 as Lieutenant colonel of the 95th Regiment, Illinois Infantry volunteers. Mustered in September 4, 1862; promoted to colonel May 21, 1863, to rank from January 24, 1863; killed in action at Guntown June 10, 1864. Colonel Humphrey was from Franklin township, DeKalb County, Illinois and is buried there at Charter Oak Cemetery.
