Nice Half Plate image of a Union artilleryman wearing mounted services jacket, and showing off his unsheathed model 1840 artillery saber. You rarely see images in this large half plate size. He is unidentified, but there are crossed cannons and what looks to be a "2" on his forage cap.

Complete with nice leatherette case in good shape with both hooks and intact original spine. Some surface scratches on image, but they don't detract from this strong, well-contrasted and bright ambrotype.
