CIVIL WAR UNION LIEUTENANT GENERAL ULYSSES S. 1855 was a prominent military leader and the 18th U. He is best known for leading the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War. Grant was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General during the Civil War, a rank previously held only by George Washington.
