Chatten of Company A of the Virginia militia, whom later formed up Company A of the 38th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded in the arm during Pickett's Charge, captured on the 4th of July, and was sent to Ft. Delaware where he died about two-months later. This image shows him wearing a ten-button frock that was likely distinctive of Co. A, but unfortunately no other views of Company A are out there to my knowledge.
Comes with a small binder of research. The image was split from a charcoal view of Chatten armed and another 1/6th ambrotype by Charles Rees that is NOT on the market for sale. The original paper identifying William belongs to the Rees image, and is not included. The item "38th Virginia Infantry Armistead Brigade WIA @ Gettysburg Confederate Civil War" is in sale since Thursday, September 24, 2020.
