Rare and original, 1860's Civil War Quarter Plate Tintype Photograph of a double armed Union Army Sergeant!! This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 3 1/8 by 4 1/8 and is uncased.

The Tintype is a wonderful, full length portrait of the unidentified, Union Army Soldier wearing an enlisted man's frock coat (with chevrons on the sleeve that identify him as a Sergeant) and a kepi. He is holding his rifle with fixed bayonet upright with his right hand and the hilt of a rather large knife can be seen at his belt. He also wears an oval, "US" belt plate and a round chest plate on a wide leather strap that holds his cartridge box.

There is a cap box at his belt also. Interestingly, there appears to be another bayonet in a scabbard at his left hip. He stands in a photographer's studio next to a draped table with a large book on it. Neither the Soldier nor the Photographer are identified in any way. This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of a double armed Union Army Sergeant is in very good condition.

The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. There is no significant surface loss and no flaking although there are a few small spots of loss to the emulsion around what appears to be a shadow of a previous brass matt. There are also a number of unobtrusive, shallow bends to the plate.
