Civil War ambrotype in brass frame, approximately 4 1/4" x 3 1/4" in the frame - believe this is referred to as a quarter plate. Dark-haired young man wears what appears to be a frock coat with seven "muffin" buttons visible; another is hidden behind the barrel of the revolver. There is no piping on the collar and none showing on what is visible of the cuff. The material of the coat is dark, but not particularly so, and the collar edges are squared and fairly far apart. The collar is not stiffened and the tips of the corners are beginning to bend over.Don't believe this is a Federal frock coat. Cannot discern the design on the buttons - maybe you can. His slouch hat is dark, but not black. He brandishes what appears to be an English Hollis & Sheath revolver, or some variant thereof. Condition is overall good, with some emulsion near the bottom left and scattered crazing near top center.
In person, the image is bright and sharp. Out of a shelf of tintypes and ambrotypes this one jumps out from a good distance.
I do not overstate the case in saying that this could well be a young Confederate. A modern thin black metal backing plate has been inserted behind the plate, with what appears to be a thin layer of white backing material sandwiched behind; this does not detract whatsoever from the image. Have not removed the image from its present frame. The image is guaranteed to be original to the Civil War period. The item "Civil War ambrotype possible Rebel" is in sale since Thursday, March 7, 2019.
