This Carte De Visite (CDV) dates to the 1860s, possibly during the Civil War, but if not, soon after. This young man was probably spared going to the Civil War, as a Confederate soldier, just by virtue of a couple years of age. He is identified on the back: Rufus Coleman, Shady Grove, Tennessee (Great Grandfather). This young man had the lineage to be a fine fiddler, as we found the following excerpt, presumably about his father, Rufus Coleman. Powhattan Gordon married Caroline Coleman of Maury County, who was a sister of William and Rufus Coleman.

Rufus Coleman was the best fiddler to be found in Hickman County in the early days. He clerked for William Coleman and Powhattan Gordon, who, about 1830, had a store near where the late Joseph Bond lived. This store was on the Dr. Greenfield Smith place, and was situated on the south bank of Duck River near the old ferry landing.

We found the following on Rufus Coleman Jr. 10, 1850, Hickman County, Tennessee, USA; Death: Aug. 20, 1937, Duck River, Hickman County, Tennessee, USA; Family links: Parents: Rufus Coleman (1812 - 1887), Elizabeth Hoover Coleman (1819 - 1883); Spouse: Sarah Elizabeth Cochran Coleman (1871 - 1937); Children: James Edward Clayton (1892 - 1970), Rufus Brown Coleman (1901 - 1995), Elizabeth Gail Coleman Church (1908 - 2003); Siblings: Sarah Theresa Coleman Mobly (1843 - 1936), Elizabeth Stone Coleman McEwen (1845 - 1904), William White Coleman (1848 - 1924), Samuel Phillip Coleman (1856 - 1924); Inscription: Has Masonic Emblem above his name; Burial: Stand Cemetery, Shady Grove Duck River, Hickman County, Tennessee, USA. We found the following regarding Columbia, Tennessee. The self-proclaimed'Mule capital of the world,' Columbia annually celebrates the city-designated Mule Day each April. Columbia and Maury County are acknowledged as the'Antebellum Homes Capital of Tennessee,' with more pre-Civil War homes than any other county in the state. Columbia is also the home of the national headquarters for the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Approximately 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches. Photo: The photo is wrapped in plastic and appears to be in very good condition.

Appears to be a very tiny tear on left front of photo. Location: Photo Tray 1 Bookshelf D.
