1800s CDV PHOTO ALBUM with36 CDVs INCLUDING ABE LINCOLN, 2 CIVIL WAR GENERALS, ETC

  

Those three letters are an acronym for the French carte de visite or visiting card. This style of antique photography took over in popularity from the daguerreotype or ambrotype of the 1840s and 1850s. Though they provided lovely images, the dag and ambro were easily damaged and not suitable to tuck into an album or a letter to a friend. The Civil War era of the 1860s, however, saw a wide acceptance of the cdv, the invention of either Adolph Disderi in 1854 or Louis Dodero in 1851.

The cdv photograph belongs to the group known as card photographs because the albumen print (a mixture of egg whites, sodium chloride, and silver nitrate) was mounted on paper cards. The size of a cdv is 2 1/4" x 4 1/4" (although you may see them sized as 4" x 2 1/2"). There are 36 CDV photos in this antique photo albums, including one of ABRAHAM LINCOLN, TWO OF CIVIL WAR GENERALS, AND ANOTHER TWO OF CIVIL WAR INDIVIDUALS: A CIVIL WAR PRIVATE, AND A CIVIL WAR LIEUTENANT. The previous owner identified each of the photos on an index sheet presumably from this very album which was present but detached.

Both sides of that page are shown in separate photos of this listing. The photo of Abraham Lincoln is also seen in this link. Two things noteworthy about this photo is that, on this webpage at least, it is claimed to be the first photo of Lincoln once elected President. Also of note is that the hair is parted to our left Lincolns right.

In other photos of Lincoln I see online, the hair is parted to our right Lincolns left. Another of the photos is of General Halleck. I have been able to find another copy of that one as well, found here. Most of the photos were lodged into their slots and I did not want to remove them and damage the photo album.

The Lincoln photo was lodged in its slot. I was able to remove two of the photos so I was able to see the identifying. One is of the Civil War Private, identified as Private Dusenburg of Do 13. (see photo of index with that entry).

The maker of that is HallettBowery. I can also see the back of the photo on the flip side of this leaf, and it is Chas. Post is penciled on this CDV and the index notes a Mary P.

The other photo I could dislodge was published by G. Roorbach from a negative by J.

Gurney, and the adjacent back which was of Empress Eugenia, was produced by D. Please see photos of the list of CDVs, but other notables on this list include: Tom Thumb & Lady? Others appear to be of individuals known by the original owner of the album, but they may also be notable. The leather photo album is solidly bound except for the detached index page. The boards remain attached, but are worn at the edges.
