This period Albumen Photograph measures approx. 2 1/8 by 3 3/8" and is mounted on its original 2 1/2" by 4 Card Mount. The Photograph features a 3/4 length portrait of Lieutenant General Grant in full uniform with his right hand in his trouser pocket and his left hand grasping the lapel of his coat. On his left arm he wears a band of black cloth with hanging streamers which is most assuredly a mourning armband in memory of the recently assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.
The card mount carries the Mark of Mathew Brady on both the recto and the verso. There has always been some question as to who took this rare and striking image. It has been reported by some that it was taken by Gundenhurst - it was NOT taken by Mathew Brady. Over the years we have handled examples of this photograph with many different backmarks and on blank back mounts - apparently even Mathew Brady issued a pirated version of this popular portrait of Grant. This rare and original, albumen CDV Photograph is in excellent condition - clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved exhibiting somewhat soft focus (as one would expect from a pirated image) but strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The gold rule border, square corner card mount is very well preserved. A very rare and original, 1865 CDV Portrait Photo of Ulysses S. Grant wearing an elaborate mourning armband in remembrance of Abraham Lincoln published by Mathew Brady and a fantastic addition to any collection!
