Abraham Lincoln 1863 Civil War Political Cartoon Draft Riots CDV Enrollment Act

  

DETAILS: Original Carte Des Visites (CDV) political cartoon of Abraham Lincoln published by J. Hall of New York, 1863. The card is a protest against Lincoln adthe recently passed Enrollment Act. Great thematic use of Lincoln's image, dressed as an aging grandma and studying the newspaper with the headline "Draft" to discern That's What's the Matter.

" Measures 2.5" x 4.0 inches. BACKGROUND: The Enrollment Act of 1863 authorized President Lincoln to draft up to 300,000 men. A quota was assigned to each congressional district.

If sufficient volunteers failed to be recruited, a lottery would be held to determine who would be forcibly enrolled. Conscription was very unpopular in the Northeast.

The war had never been popular, particularly after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation expanded the war's purpose. Economic conditions had been exacerbated by the blockade of Southern ports.

But the introduction of the Enrollment Act led to a backlash among the citizens of the Northeast. CONDITION: CDV photo card is in high grade condition. Well centered with all four borders clearly visible. All four corners are present (which is a rarity for this CDV card as most examples have clipped corners).

One corner has a light corner bump which is visible in the images provided. Free of stains or markings. Numerically we would grade it an 8.5 which is exceptionally high for a CDV card from this period. Most likely among the cleanest examples of this particular political cartoon CDV left in existence - if not the cleanest!
