The 10th Illinois Cavalry Regiment served in the Union Army between July 29, 1861 and July 11, 1865 during the Civil War. The regiment was involved in the Battles of Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain, Jonesborough, Bentonville, Siege of Atlanta and March to the Sea. SPERRY was mustered into I Co. IL 10th Cavalry on December 6, 1861. He re-enlisted on January 3, 1864 and was mustered out on November 22, 1865. He was promoted to Quarter Master Sergeant on January 1, 1865. 5 pp, 4 ¾ x 7 ¾, Sperry writes on March 19, 1862, on wonderful patriotic stationary, No North, no South, no East, no West, But Equal and Exact Justice to all.

When I was at Springfield I saw the U. Officer that mustered us in & he said that we would [not] have drawn our pay in the company. I intend to follow the regiment to Hell or have it. We will go back to Camp Butler to guard them prisoners.

It [is] uncertain what they will do with us. We got our sabers this evening.

It is the talk all over the camp that we must leave here before we are discharged. Colonel Barrett got a dispatch from the president that he didnt want us [discharged]... You shall have some as soon as I can get it. I cant borrow any from the boys... I wish I had you to help me..
