HEINTZELMAN & STAFF AT ARLINGTON HOUSE. Heintzelman and his staff standing on the eastern steps of Arlington House (otherwise known as the Custis-Lee Mansion). The former residence of General Robert E. The grounds of which were later to be the. Located just across the Potomac River from Washington DC.

During the Civil War, Heintzelman ultimately was to reach the brevet rank of major general. Relieved of duty with the Army of the Potomac in late 1862, he was assigned to the defense of Washington DC in command of the Department of Washington. This photograph was most likely taken around that time. Heintzelman (bearded) appears at the center of the group. To his right is General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (wearing a slouch hat). Also, below are two additional photographs. Of Arlington House -- one of Union soldiers on the eastern lawn (1864), and another today, showing the gravesites of President John F.

Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Kennedy down the hill from the House. An original albumen photograph taken at a very significant location of a notable general in charge of the defense of Washington during the American Civil War. Photograph measures 8-1/2" x 6-1/2" on a mount measuring 11-1/2" x 9-1/4". No international sale of this lot.
