Promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers in November 1862, he commanded the artillery of the Army of the Potomacs "Center Grand Division" at the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Union artillery reserved at the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville and the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg (where his guns helped to destroy the Confederates in Pickett's Charge on the Third Day of the engagement). In the 1864 he was given command of a brigade of Heavy Artillery units that were converted to infantry, which he led at the Battles of Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. At Cold Harbor he was severely wounded in the foot, and was unable to render any more field service. In March 1865 he received the brevet of Major General, US Volunteers for "great gallantry at the Battle of Cold Harbor".
In 1866 he was mustered out of the volunteer service, and was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in the Regular Army, serving as deputy Quartermaster General. His injuries during the war contributed to his declining health, and he died at age 43.
