Civil War Union Veteran Portrait Celluloid Photograph GAR Medals Oval Tin Frame

  

Offered here is an antique celluloid photo-button portrait depicting an elderly Union Civil War veteran in a postwar military-style uniform. The image is mounted within an oval metal backing and protected by a clear, slightly domed celluloid covering. This style is commonly called a celluloid photograph, celluloid photo button or celluloid-covered portrait.

The image, protective covering and metal backing are joined together around the rolled outer edge, creating a large tabletop version of the photographic buttons popular around the turn of the 20th century. The veteran stands outdoors wearing a dark single-breasted uniform coat with contrasting collar trim, bright buttons and two small medals or veteran badges pinned to his chest. He holds a dark brimmed hat at his side. His white hair, mustache and beard indicate that this portrait was taken decades after the Civil War, likely during the late 1890s or early 1900s. The uniform may be connected with a National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, a state soldiers' home or a veterans' organization such as the Grand Army of the Republic.

The oval portrait measures approximately 7 inches tall and about 5¾ inches wide. A folding wire easel attached to the metal back allows it to stand on a tabletop, mantel or shelf. The celluloid covering has age-related yellowing, scratches, scuffs, cloudiness and scattered dark marks. The photograph has fading, reduced contrast, discoloration and surface disturbance, particularly across the lower portion of the uniform.

The metal back has oxidation, spotting and finish loss. The wire easel remains attached and functional.

This is an appealing example of early photographic presentation as well as a compelling piece of Civil War veteran history. Although the soldier's name has been lost, his medals remain pinned to his coat and his likeness has endured beneath its old celluloid surface for more than a century.
