AUSTIN MCKINNEY of Norwich, CT, enlisted on August 15, 1862, as a Corporal into I Co. While in the military, he was promoted to Sergeant, 1. Was in the battles of Fredericksburg, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Chaffin's Farm, Siege of Suffolk, Siege of Petersburg, Second Battle of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign. Offering two ALSs from McKinney to his wife, a cabinet photograph believed to be of Mrs. Peck's Headquarters at Suffolk, Va.

There was a member of our company went home to Norwich this week and I sent you that little rabbit that I got at the Battle of Fredericksburg and supposed you should have got it before this time. It is pretty dirty but suppose it is better than nothing for it came from Fredericksburg... I have just wrote to Hezey (his brother) and hope he will get it and answer it for I want to hear from him very much for it has been a long time since I have heard from him.

When I wrote to you last I told you about the boat Cumberland that was sunk by the rebel boat Merrimack. I have also got a piece of the boat - Congress -that the rebels burnt at the same time I have a heart of it and will send that also the boat was burnt to the water's edge... McKinney The relics McKinney mentions are not present.

2 pp, 7 7/8 x 10, Camp, 21. I do not feel very well as I went on picket yesterday in the rain. It rained all night and this forenoon and there was no shelter and I got wet and besides I had no sleep since night before last.

Soon as I finish this shall got to bed and sleep hard enough to make up for last night. About two hours ago orders came to be ready to march at day light. We do not know where we are going but are ordered to report at City Point. I hope the order will be countermanded but it may be for the best wherever we go. We have only a little over four months anyway. I went around the city last Sunday and there was a dog followed me to my quarters. He looks just like Dandis and he follows me everywhere I go. He went on picket with me.
