Whole-plate albumen print showing the Civil War flag of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry, emblazoned with list of the unit's battles, including the fateful final notation Appomattox Ct. Overall dimensions of mount 8 x 10 inches (21x25 cm).

Visible area of image 6 x 7 inches (15x18 cm). Image shows some browning / yellowing, as does the mount. This California origin is indicated on their flag by the Californian "Eureka" motto and what appears to be the California state seal.

The unit saw extensive service in the Eastern theater and was present during the final campaign which forced Lee's surrender -- as proudly marked by the notation Appomattox Ct. House as the last of their listed actions. They also marched in the Grand Review of the Armies held in Washington May 23, 1865, where it seems likely this flag would have been displayed. A rare, dated period image celebrating the conclusion of America's hard-fought struggle.
