Very Rare MOLLUS Civil War/Grand ReviewithAbraham Lincoln Photograph Album

  

It is my absolute pleasure to be offering the best Civil War related photograph album that I have seen in recent memory. This album was produced and assembled by Colonel Albert Ordway who was a historian of the Massachusetts Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. This MOLLUS album is titled "Pictorial History of the War of the Rebellion-Miscellaneous-Vol 1".

It contains 91 original prints made directly from original negatives. Almost all are in albumen format and almost all of them are captioned or titled. The photographs range from 8x10 inch all the way down to CDV size photographs.

There are many rare images in the album, including a group portrait with General George Custer. What I feel is the most important part of this collection is related to the Grand Review of the Armies in May 1865.

There are 40 photographs in the album that deal with the Grand Review. Some of these are never found in printed form, making this an extremely rare collection. It depicts crowds, formations, stands of dignitaries and more. An astonishing collection of photographs to say the least.

At the end of the description, I will describe each photograph in detail. There are also photographs of President Abraham Lincoln, officers of the Lincoln Conspiracy Trial, Sanitary Commission, and a rare photograph related to the trans-continental railroad. Next part of the album relates to the Grand Review, Washington D. Many rare images in this group, a truly one of a kind collection. Most have been attributed to Matthew Brady. Veteran Reserve Guard in front of Presidential Reviewing Stand. Visible are General Grant, Secretary Stanton, President Andrew Johnson, Secretary Welles, General Sherman and General Meigs.

Extremely rare image credited to Matthew Brady by the Library of Congress. Patriotic bunting with eleven battle honors. General Grant and Secretary Stanton can be seen under magnification.

Parade visible as the blur at center, a unique image by Brady that is near impossible to find in printed format. Grand Review-View on Pennsylvania Avenue between 9th and 7th Streets.

Exceedingly rare image attributed to Matthew Brady by the Library of Congress. The image in the LOC is badly cracked. I was unable to find another published view. Shows the Army of the Potomac led by Collis' Zoaves in their distinctive white turbans. The LOC notes that Brady's studio is in the far right of the photograph.

The 2 stereo sized photos show spectators at the Treasury Department in the grandstand. Two close up views from a rarely seen perspective. There are also 3 prints of Capitol Hill. One has a fantastic sign that reads The Public Schools of Washington Welcome the Heroes of the Republic. Copyprint showing President Buchanan and Cabinet.

Copyprint showing President Lincoln and Cabinet. Lincoln's portrait is based off an engraving, the cabinet members are real photographs. Executive Officers of the U. CDV sized prints, each is individually marked including President Lincoln, Secretary of War Cameron, Secretary of Interior Usher, Secretary of Interior Smith, Attorney General Speed, Secretary of Treasury Chase and Attorney General Bates.

Government CDV sized prints including President Lincoln, Vice President Hamlin, Seward, Chase, Cameron, Stanton, Dana and Welles. Condition: The album and binding show wear and scuffs, but overall tight and very solid. Condition varies from a few that are poor with heavy foxing, to many that are sharp and in excellent condition. A truly remarkable photograph album in a rare large size that would be the pinnacle of most Civil War photograph collections. It will be fully insured wherever it is sent.
