VERY RARE MUSEUM QUALITY CIVIL WAR DOUBLE. This is a rare Museum Quality Civil War Sixth Plate Cased. Photographs are housed in a beautiful, Gutta Percha / Thermoplastic, Union Hard Case with original matt and binding and cover glass.
The Union Case is very beautiful, it looks new and very well preserved. It is a rich and dark, chocolate brown color. The front has a ribbon inscribed with the words, The Union and Constitution, above a Union Shield surrounded on both sides by the Union flag. All of this is guarded above by an eagle.
The Case is in excellent condition. The molded images on both sides are crisp and sharp with not even a hint damage or wear to even the highest points of the design. The surface is bright and retains its original brilliant surface shine. The corners are sharp and there are no edge chips, significant wear, cracks, repairs or damage of any kind. Inside are two 1/6 plate hand tinted tintypes of a handsome and bold looking married couple on the left and on the right we see the same gentleman dressed in this Union uniform looking rather sad and tired. The couple and soldier is quite delicately hand tinted on the cheeks and all their jewelry and the metal on his uniform are hand gilded gold. Both images are quite detailed with great subtlety of both tone and coloring. The soldier is surrounded by a mat that at the top reads, Union, between 2 union shields; moving towards the bottom are swords followed by American flags on both sides with crossed cannons in the middle that reads 76 UNION 51 or 61, I cannot determine which.Behind the soldier tintype, we discovered some typing of a poem (see enlargement). This poem must have been added later by a relative, as the Songs were not published until 1900. VERY IMPORTANT: MY PHOTOGRAPHER HAS SENT ME SEVERAL PHOTOS THAT ARE COVERED WITH TINY DUST SPOTS, I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO REPHOTO THEM BUT BE ASSURED THE DUST YOU SEE IS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE GLASS. ITS HARDLY NOTICABLE TO THE NAKED EYE, BUT THE CAMERA PICKS IT UP.
IT CAN BE EASILY REMOVED WITH A BRUSH. This is an extremely rare, double portrait of a husband/wife and the husband as soldier, museum quality 1860s Civil War Sixth Plate.
