1860's CIVIL WAR LARGE FORMAT ALBUMEN PHOTO OF UNION OFFICERS READING A MAP

  

VERY rare and original, 1860's Large Format, Albumen Photograph of three armed Union Civil War Officers studying a map. This fantastic, period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 5 1/4 by 7 5/8 (sight) and is matted and framed for display in a period, oval, gold gilt surface wood and gesso frame.

12 1/2" by 14 1/2" and both the matting and the frame appear to be original to the Image. This wonderful, Album Photograph pictures the three unidentified officers in uniform each with a hand on the hilt of their sword. Two of the Officers are seated and have a larg map spread over their laps. One is studying it intently while the other is pointing out something on the map to the officer standing to the right. The two officers on the left wear shoulder straps with oak leaf clusters identifying them as Majors or Lieutenant Colonel. We cannot make out the insignia of the shoulder straps of the standing officer. This very rare and wonderful, Large Format Photograph is in very good condition and displays nicely as matted and framed..

The Image exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. The Image is generally clean with uniform age toning and the matt also has age toning. We did remove the back of the frame in the hopes of identifying the Officers and the card mount is trimmed to the edges of the Photo. There is no identification of either the subjects or the photographer.

The original frame is attractive and also in very good condition with the original gold gilt surface intact but with some small chips and loss to the gesso embellishment.
