Each photographs is individually mounted onto paperboard. Period ink manuscript identifications (with the Cox identification appearing to be his autograph) and their corresponing ranks below each image reading. During the Civil War, Jacob Cox entered service as a volunteer in Ohio. Later his brigade joined the Department of West Virgina, fighting successfully under General McClellan in the Kanawha Valley campaign.
Cox took over the command of the Kawawha Division of the IX Corp of the Army of the Potomac, and participated in the Battle of Antietam. In 1864 and 1865, Cox commanded the 3rd Division of the XXIII Corps of the Army of the Ohio. He is known to have saved the center of the Union battle line during the Battle of Franklin in 1864. Following the war, Cox served as a Republican politician in the state of Ohio. Collage is housed in a mid-19th century oval mahogany frame with the original shellac surface.
Photographs are protected behind old wavy, bubbled glass. Approximate exterior frame elliptical size is 18-1/4" x 21-1/4" with an approximate sight size of 12-1/2" x 15-1/2". Condition: Frame has nicks, scuffs, light soiling. Mounting board is toned with some spots. There are two mount board edge tears which do not enter the images (1-1/2" right center) and (4" top center). Photographs have toning and light edge wear.
