This is a 1/6 plate single metal tintype of a Civil War Soldier holding a rifle with a bayonet. There is hand-coloring on the soldiers cheeks and gold painted on the uniform buttons. There is a table with a printed cloth on it next to him. It is in very good shape, with normal wear and tear for something over 150 years old. The size of the tintype is 3 1/8 x 2 ½ inches. A tintype is a positive photograph made by a collodion process on a thin iron plate having a darkened surface.

The first patent of the tintype was 1856 but they did not become popular until the 1860s. Arriving just prior to the Civil War, tintypes became the favorite way for a soldier to capture his likeness before heading off to battle. Most Civil War tintypes were shot in a studio against a painted backdrop.

In fact, the date and studio location of the image can sometimes be identified just because of the design of the backdrop. The item "Civil War Soldier Tintype" is in sale since Tuesday, January 24, 2017.
