LOT of 8, TOMASTON CT, CL RUSSELL POST 68, CIVIL WAR GAR PHOTOS, etc, GETTYSBURG. CONNECTICUT CIVIL WAR VETERAN'S ARCHIVE; Lot of 8 items including various photographic images and GAR memorabilia.

There are two mounted photographs on board. These are circa 1902 and show Civil War veterans with the Soldier's Monument in Tomaston, Connecticut.

I presume that these are members of the C. Russell Post #68 of Tomaston. This is significant because this monument was erected primarily due to the efforts of a G. Partial lettering on the monument reads, ERECTED BY C. AND CITIZENS, IN COMMEMORATION OF THE SOLDIERS WHO SERVED IN THE CIVIL WAR.

It was erected in 1902, the same period as the photograph. Pencil writing on mount of one photograph reads; "TOMASTON". Pencil notation on both images above the same person who is standing in the back right region reads; "Pa W". The veterans wear GAR badges. Approximate mount size is 10" x 8".

NOTE: One of the photographs shows 9 men and the other 10. See the man at the far right which only appears in one of the images. I suspect that his image was added to the group photograph, because the shadow and clarity doesn't seem to match the other men in the image. Possibly this is of some significance and would benefit from further research.

The real photograph postcard, which depicts GAR members, presumably depicts veterans from the same group mentioned above. They proudly display the U. Period pencil writing on the reverse reads, Civil War Vets - Grandpa Watrous - Uncle Julian W.

Research reveals that there was a Julian F. Watraus and a John N. Watraus who both served with the 27th Regiment, Connecticut Infantry. Possibly these men are in the RPPC and the mounted photographs with the monument. Approximate size is 3-3/8" x 5-1/2". The CDV (carte-de-visite) photograph depicts a Civil War soldier in uniform. Full length standing portrait with sleeping white dog at his feet. This photograph is backmarked by photographer Wm. Approximate size is 2-1/8" x 4". Cabinet card photograph of a man in GAR uniform with period pencil written identification on the reverse, "Henry Baker". The NPS Civil War database reveals multiple results for Henry Baker serving in Connecticut regiments. Approximate mount size is 5-3/8" x 6-3/8". Tintype Photograph; Outdoor portrait of three soldiers in dress uniform and holding saber swords. Note: areas of image loss due to metal oxidation on borders, also in foreground. Approximate size is 2-1/2" x 3-3/8".

Metal Badge Pinback with Text; "SOUVENIR - 50th ANNIVERSARY - BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG - 1913". By Schwaabs & Sons of Milwaukee. Approximate size is 1-1/2" x 2-1/4". Metal Souvenir Plate; Fiftieth Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg... Includes embossed images of Generals Lee and Meade, plus their Gettysburg headquarters.

Made in Japan by A. Approximate size is 4-1/2" x 3-3/4". Condition: overall soiling and staining, occasional dings, scuffs, edge bumps and spots.
