Armed Civil War Soldiers

  

Original 1/6 ambrotype of two soldiers with fixed bayonets, hand painted gold buckles. Comes in a full case that is 3.75"x 3.25" when closed. Looks to be in very good condition. I haven't taken it apart but when held at an angle it looks like the black backing paint (not the image / emulsion itself) is starting to flake.

That failing backing paint can typically just be scraped off and replaced with a piece of black velvet or paper... I just don't feel like doing it.

The vertical lines in the upper left and bottom right look like they might be on the photo surface but under magnification don't appear to me to be mat abrasions to me... Possibly defects that have always been there.
