CDV of Surgeon Alfred Henry Thurston served as a Surgeon 10/61-7/65, dying in August of 1865. A Graduate of Columbia Medical School in NY, Surgeon Thurston served as; Surgeon of the 12th NY Militia before the War which saw service in Washington DC during the first three months of the War, in Oct of 1861 he was appointed Surgeon and Major by Lincoln and detailed to the Army of Cumberland where he took charge of the University Hospital in Nashville Tn under the Army, in March of 1862 he was the Medical Director under General Rosecrans of the Army of the Cumberland, Medical Director of the 12th Corps in 1863 under General Slocum, in 1864 he transferred into the Army of the Potomac at Belle Plaine Va, then took over command of Grant Hospital at Willetts Point NY, Breveted Lt Colonel in March of 1863 he died of a disease contracted in the Army in August of 1865 a month after leaving he service. A member of the Catholic Church and Masonic Order. Nicely ink signed view as Medical Director 12th Corps.
