Here we offer a Civil War-era CDV photograph of President Abraham Lincoln, framed under convex glass in a very rare mid-19th Century gutta percha and brass frame that has Paris hallmarks. The CDV is a version of the oft-reproduced February 9, 1864 Anthony Berger image. Gutta percha was the world's first sturdy latex plastic, processed from the sap of rubber trees in the mid-19th century.

The material was used to make picture frames, beads for jewelry, dental fillings, and insulation for early telegraph lines. Today, such items as this are sought by gutta percha collectors. The frame remarkably features its original convex glass and an engraved brass inner rim with tabs that bend over the back to hold the picture in. The gutta percha holds a loop for wall hanging and is impressed with an incised stamp on the back upper right corner that has the name H. A Paris and, in the upper left corner a crown over a V Mark.

The Lincoln CDV is actually backed by a silver coated brass tintype that has faded beyond recognition. I've sealed the back with some ph-neutral binder's adhesive and rice paper.

The frame is in excellent condition with minor edgewear and 7 of the original 23 brass tabs missing (please see pics). I have photographed it disassembled so that you don't need to take it apart, as every time you do so you run the risk of breaking off one of the tabs. The original 19th-Century CDV is unmarked and has been neatly cut to fit the frame. It bears no studio imprint. The frame measures approximately 4.75 x 4-inches.

The center brass measures 3.25 x 2.75-inches. This splendid relic of the Civil War era will make a remarkable addition to your collection or a very thoughtful gift for an enthusiast.
