Dr. Colin Arrott, Army Contract Surgeon, Fort Delaware, Civil War CDV Photo
The first is an original Civil War Carte De Visite (CDV) of Dr. Colin Arrott, who was an Army contract surgeon stationed at Fort Delaware in the 1850s and 1860s. He was contracted to provide medical care for the Army Corps of Engineer (ACOE) folks (both military and civilian) working to build and finalize construction of Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island. Doctor Arrott continued his services during the war. This CDV photograph shows Doctor Arrott in his contract surgeon uniform. The photographer of this image is John L. Gihon of 1024 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gihon was a popular photographer for folks on Pea Patch Island during the war. He made many trips there to photograph Union soldiers and confederate prisoners of war. Arrott in 1862 while living at Fort Delaware. Note: only the fronts of the envelopes remain.
