Truly, this piece belongs in a museum. This was featured in the Luzerne County Historical Society! And it could be YOURS! This is a framed tinted photograph of William Camp Gildersleeve, a known merchant and famed abolitionist. The provenance that we have is what is written on the back of this photo. He provided refuge to fugitive slaves at his home and business near here. Gildersleeve testified in a U. Supreme Court case, Maxwell vs. Righter, in which a fugitive, William Thomas, was shot and wounded by deputy U. The case and his testimony received national attention, especially in African American newspapers. Frame measure 12" x 14.5". There aren't too many photos of this famous historical figure and abolitionist, and it's truly a one of a kind piece.
