Post Civil War Cabinet Card of Veteran Major Elisha W. Green, 29th Illinois

  

This postwar cabinet card features a veteran who has seen his share of war. He stares into the camera with a gaunt expression. GAR buttons are visible on his coat and vest.

He wears a small pin on his lapel of a major's oak leaf shoulder strap. An ink inscription on the reverse reads Mr. The photographer's imprint is Benham of Golconda, Illinois. Green enlisted as a sergeant major in the 29th Illinois in August 1861.

He would have been present for the battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh in early 1862 before being promoted to Captain of Company C that September. He was again promoted-to Major-in November 1863. He survived the war and mustered out in November 1865. Major Green's residence is listed as Shawneetown in HDS, which is not far up the Ohio River from Golconda. The cabinet card measures 4 1/4" x 6 1/2". It is in excellent condition save for one place right above Green's shoulder on the left, where an impact from the reverse of the card nearly punctured the albumen, but instead left only a dent.
